Let the Training Begin

In a newly refurbished training room and an updated IT system including a large screen TV, the training that the Global Health Ministries had been working on for several months started today.

Tumaini Kweka, hospice coordinator with Ann Allison

Prior to coming to Tanzania, we had several zoom calls with the Selian Hospice Team to learn their training needs.  Ann Allison, our team member who is an RN and palliative care/hospice educator, worked tirelessly to compile several presentations including an Overview of Hospice/Palliative Care, Integrative Healing Therapies, Symptom Management,  and wound management.   The team was grateful for her leadership, guidance and expertise as we prepared our 5 days of training.

Thirty two people gathered for the training which began with devotions.   Our team members, Jack Swanson and Jim Brown accompanied the hymns with the guitar and mandolin.   We sang with one voice and many languages. The harmony was heavenly.

Ann kicked off the presentation with  a general overview of Hospice and Palliative Care which was well received.   In Tanzanian style, we had tea and food, following  her presentation and the 15 minute break quickly turned into  a 30 min break.

Dr. Jack Swanson, an oncologist and palliative care physician who wove in many stories into his talk on “Palliative Care:  What, When, Where, and How.”  His humor, expertise and ability to make the what, when, where and how of Palliative Care real captivated the group.

One training that had not been on the schedule grew out of a conversation we had with Dr. Goodwill at Arusha Lutheran Medical Center when we first arrived.   He was asking Jim Brown, IT specialist about the use of AI in the medical setting and after a lively discussion between the two, Jim agreed to create a training on The Basics of Artificial Intelligence.   It sparked the curiosity of many and Jim fielded numerous questions.

The day made all of us excited about the four days of training that are scheduled next week.
